Wildland Firefighter Careers
Challenge yourself to new limits, join the forest service wildland firefighting staff who serve to protect millions of acres of our forests, our communities, and our natural resources. Wildland firefighters may be required to work long hours in challenging and changing conditions, such as high temperatures and steep terrain. This job does have many rewards, including the opportunity to work in some of the most beautiful places in the country and create friendships that last a lifetime. The U.S. Forest Service and other federal agencies hire wildland firefighters at different times of the year, depending on location.

Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age before fire season begins
- Classes that must be completed are:
- S-130
- S-190
- L-180
- IS 100
- IS 700
- Pack Test (Arduous) 45 minute walk with a 45 pound pack for 3 miles on a track.
- Field day to complete Guard School requirement (we provide)
Appointment Types:
- 1039 Temp Seasonal (Apply through USA Jobs)
- VRA - Veteran Recruitment Appointment
- AD hire/ call when needed
- Training time is paid for (80 Hours)
- Can be hired later on if positions are not filled through traditional pathways
GS pay scale does not include overtime rate or hazard pay, which would be in addition to the hourly rate below.
- GS-03-01: 20.67/hr
- GS-04-01: 23.20/hr
- GS-05-01: 25.95/hr
