Lookout Fire

On August 5, 2023, firefighters responded to the Lookout Fire on the McKenzie River Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest within the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. Hot and dry weather conditions and old growth timber on steep terrain created challenging wildfire suppression conditions and caused rapid growth during periods of the two-months-long firefighting effort. Heavy fuels hindered early suppression efforts. Aviation including helicopters, air tankers, and drones were heavily utilized in the full suppression efforts.
