Gold mining was the island’s most important economic activity during the early 16th century.

The Luquillo Mountains have a long history that involves pre-Columbian cultures, Spanish colonization, gold mining and timber exploitation, the construction of access roads and facilities, and ultimately forest management and research.

Enjoy these priceless and beautiful resources during your visit. Remember that they represent an irreplaceable asset. Please treat them with respect and do not damage them in any way. It is an offense under the federal Criminal Code to unearth, remove, damage, alter or deface any archaeological resource in the forest.

La sierra de Luquillo tiene una larga historia que incluye culturas precolombinas, la colonización española, las minas de oro y la explotación de la madera, la construcción de rutas e instalaciones de acceso, y finalmente la gestión y la investigación de los bosques.

Disfrute estos invaluables y hermosos recursos durante su visita. Recuerde que representan un bien irremplazable; por favor trátelos con respeto y no los dañen. Es una ofensa al código Penal Federal el excavar, remover, dañar, alterar o desfigurar cualquier recurso arqueológico en el bosque.

The Civilian Conservation Corps

CCC Road Construction

From planting trees to building roads, the Civilian Conservation Corps, worked to heal the natural environment on a massive scale. Active during the Great Depression, the CCC was established in 1933 to put people back to work, while improving public lands.
