Unexploded Ordnance Safely Disposed in Dolly Sods
Late Wednesday evening on October 16th, an unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the Dolly Sods area was reported to the Forest Service by a member of the public. On Thursday morning, Forest Service personnel verified the location and size of the suspected UXO.
Monongahela National Forest law enforcement and fire personnel, in coordination with the West Virginia State Police and emergency responders from Tucker and Grant Counties, responded and safely disposed of the UXO.
As a reminder, Dolly Sods was used as a military training ground during World War II. Despite past cleanup efforts, unexploded artillery and mortar shells may still be present in the area today.
If you encounter a possible UXO:

- Back away in the direction you came.
- Mark or note the location using GPS coordinates, a map, or nearby landmarks.
