Recreation

Trails webpages and information will not be available until May 2025. Thank you for your patience while we work through getting the most updated, accurate information for you during this time.

The Tongass National Forest consists of glimmering rain forests, glaciers, icefields, mountains, waterways, and thousands of islands separated by straits and channels. It offers outstanding recreation opportunities, some very different from anything you'll experience in the lower 48 states. Camp in one of the 13 campgrounds or 140+ cabins. Hike through dense forest and alpine meadow along 450 miles of hiking trails. Explore world-class caves, one or all of our 19 Wilderness Areas, or canoe/kayak through salt water fjords and unending waterways. Experience one of our 6 bear viewing areas, or our 5 Glaciers. Watch bears, eagles, whales, and countless other wild animals in their natural settings. And of course, fish, in fresh or salt water environments, everything from herring to trout, salmon to halibut. Where will your Alaska adventure take you?

Keep in mind the Tongass is bear country. Know your bears of Alaska, stay Bear Safe! and always Leave No Trace.
