Spotlight: Native Cutthroat Trout Reintroduction Project
In 2019, the SJNF stocked 1800 fingerling native Colorado River Cutthroat Trout into the East Fork of Hermosa Creek. The Native Cutthroat Trout Reintroduction project has been going on for 30 years and is close to a successful finish. Restoring this watershed and protecting the water and fish habitat in East Fork Hermosa Creek is important in maintaining a healthy population of native trout in this stream. The collaboration between San Juan National Forest and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has been essential to the success of this project. This represents an exciting conservation success story. Our conservation efforts will now focus on replicating these populations and securing them from invasion by nonnative trout so that future generations can enjoy this rare piece of Colorado’s legacy.
