Celebrate U.N. International Day of Forests
Does your national forest or region have a restoration story to tell? Consider incorporating International Day of Forests 2021 into your public outreach this year through social media posts, a virtual or socially distanced outdoor event, a publication launch or in another creative way.
March 21 is the United Nations International Day of Forests. This year’s theme, “Forest Restoration: a path to recovery and well-being,” features the strong link between forests and human health and will be commemorated on Friday, March 19. While the festivities will look a little different this year, the celebration will continue.
The Forest Service’s Washington Office will honor the day and its 2021 theme with our partners. We will highlight global and domestic stories, presenting our expertise at the U.N. commemorative events, and engaging with youth as future environmental stewards.
To promote the event, the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization has made key international messaging, photos and videos available on their International Day of Forests’ website. For agency messaging, contact the Office of Communication for approved social media toolkits and agency information. Please join the global community on Twitter from March 19 through 21 using #IntlForestDay.
This year’s festivities will include several virtual events. For instance, the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization is hosting a photo contest to celebrate the theme. Recognizing the connection between trees and human wellness, the contest is asking participants to submit photos of a tree close to home that makes them feel better.
The U.N. created international days in the aftermath of World War II with the first United Nations Day in 1948. Over the decades, the U.N. General Assembly has designated various days to promote causes that require international cooperation and attention. They are often powerful advocacy tools to educate the public on issues, mobilize political will and resources and celebrate humanity’s achievements. The U.N. designated International Day of Forests in 2012. The day is supported by the U.N. Forum on Forests and all U.N. member countries.
