Dear Colleagues,

I am deeply saddened to share with you that Tim Hart, a smokejumper from the West Yellowstone Smokejumper Base in Montana, passed away last night as a result of injuries he sustained when jumping on the Eiks Fire in New Mexico on May 24. Earlier today, I reached out to Chief Christiansen of the USDA Forest Service to extend my sympathies and prayers to the entire Forest Service family, especially those serving on the front lines as wildland firefighters. I also have ordered flags to be flown at half-staff for one week out of respect for Tim and his duty to our nation.

Any loss of life is painful in the USDA family, but losing one of our best so early in 2021—a young man with so much life ahead of him—is that much more heartbreaking. I know in talking to Chief Christiansen that Tim was well respected by his peers and colleagues across the country, serving from Western North Carolina to West Yellowstone, Montana and many other cherished places in between. Tim grew up in Illinois and lived with his wife in Cody, Wyoming.  During his firefighting career Tim was an Engine Crew Member on the Coconino, Fremont-Winema, and Shoshone National Forests. He was a Lead Firefighter on the Asheville and Ruby Mountain (with the BLM) Hotshot Crews.  He moved to Grangeville, Idaho as a Rookie Smokejumper in 2016.   In 2019, he transitioned to West Yellowstone and the Custer Gallatin National Forest first as a Squad Leader and then as a Spotter.

Tim chose his career because he loved nature and treasured our national forests, parks and grasslands and all the beauty they afford us. Tim will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Tim’s wife, Michelle, his family, friends and the entire USDA Forest Service team today.

Secretary Vilsack
