Vermont Youth Conservation Corps lean-to conservation work at Green Mountain NF
VERMONT – The Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, in active partnership with Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests, is engaged in some serious conservation work this summer. For the last six weeks, a VYCC crew, consisting of two crew leaders and four crew members, has been working on several conservation projects at Green Mountain National Forest, including assembling two eastern hemlock, post-and-beam sheds. The sheds, delivered as 1,900 lb. kits, come with all the fixings, including sidings and trim made of kiln-dried, eastern white pine.
Last year, two leant-to’s were purchased from the Jamaica Cottage Shop located in South Londonderry, Vermont. These lean-to’s were installed at Chittenden Brook Campground and at Silver Lake Campground and Recreation Area with both receiving positive feedback from visitors. This year, two “Nantucket B” shed kits were ordered from the company. These sheds will serve as a tool and supply storage for the campground volunteers who maintain the campgrounds and recreation.
These shed projects utilize Moosalamoo National Recreation Area targeted funding which is part of the Recreation, Heritage and Wilderness language in a bill. The funds support infrastructure, trail project development and promote the ability to build the capacity of a partnership organization such as the VYCC for all the National Recreation Areas administered by the Service established after 1997.
Other projects accomplished by the VYCC crew include pulling up invasive species, such as wild chervil and wild parsnip, found along Green Mountain National Forest roads and parking areas, completing trail work on the Chittenden Brook Trail System and the North Branch Trail, repairing and maintaining water bars, drainages and other constructed features to the benefit of all visitors.
