Forest product research contributes to a sustainable future
WASHINGTON, DC—When harvested from sustainably managed forests, wood drives a renewable energy economy. Trees do not deplete natural resources, and we can replace the trees harvested by planting seeds and growing new forests. Plus, old wood products can be recycled into new, producing minimal waste. Wood also bolsters the U.S. economy; the forest products industry employs about 950,000 people and annually grosses nearly $300 billion.
Forest Service researchers and partners advance the forest products field with science and tools that diversify the way we can use wood and provide renewable manufacturing options. For example, agency scientists have tested the performance of cross-laminated timber, a sturdy and lightweight building material made from crosshatched wood panels, and are now examining and improving the adhesives holding it together.
Researchers also find innovative ways to reuse wood waste from pulping operations; they have converted pulp waste into over 1,000 gallons of certified bio-jet fuel. This process helps reduce dependence on nonrenewable fuels.
Additionally, scientists have improved storage and transportation options for biochar, or charcoal harvested from post-fire ash and residue. When spread on forest floors, biochar can store carbon and supplement soil.
Wood products transcend paper and lumber and provide green alternatives for many industry needs.
