WASHINGTON, DC—The National Suicide Hotline has a new, easier way to connect people experiencing a mental health crisis. They can either call or text the numbers 9-8-8. Modeled after 911, the new three-digit 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is designed to be a memorable and quick number that connects people who are suicidal or in any other mental health crisis to a trained mental health professional. This new shorter phone number will make it easier for people to remember and access mental health crisis services. Please note the previous 1-800-273-TALK (8255) number will continue to function indefinitely.

Too many people are experiencing suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress without the support and care they need. 988 serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the United States, you can reach a trained crisis counselor who can help. 988 Lifeline helps thousands of struggling people overcome suicidal crisis or mental-health related distress every day. 988 offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing mental health-related distress. That could be:

  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Mental health or substance use crisis, or
  • Any other kind of emotion distress

People can call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org for themselves or if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.

Agency employees, as well as qualifying family members, also have access to the Counseling Services provided through our contracted EAP provider, Espyr. Get counseling support for stress, marital and family problems, job related concerns, life transition, work life challenges, emotional issues and other concerns. The talk now feature provides immediate access to counselors for the in the moment support and guidance. This is a free and confidential resource that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
