Labor Day acknowledges the American labor movement and the unions that were the driving force of that movement, both of which contributed to the development, productivity and well-being of our country. It is the recognition of workers, including each of you.

As we approach Labor Day weekend, I wanted to start by thanking you for your dedicated public service, hard work and commitment to our mission and values.

For many Americans, Labor Day weekend is also a last, quick getaway as summer ends and the school year begins. At the Forest Service, it can mean high numbers of national forest and grassland visitors. It might mean new fires, or other accidents and incidents.

Through everything, you continue to do great work. Your commitment to service shows, whether you are directly interacting with the public, fighting fires, recruiting new employees or training the next generation of Forest Service employees.

I know some of you will be working this weekend to welcome visitors to national forests and grasslands. But if you can, take some time to recharge this weekend. Catch your breath, spend time with your families, friends or by yourself, however you best decompress. Appreciate one another. Be safe. And again, thank you for all you do.
