WASHINGTON, DC—Three Forest Service employees graduated from the Harvard Senior Executive Fellow Certificate program in April 2023. Danelle Harrison, forest supervisor, San Bernardino National Forest; Mila Alvarez Ibanez, legislative affairs specialist, Washington office; and Jennifer Hayes, national sustainable operations coordinator, Washington office; spent April at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

“Hands down, Senior Executive Fellows is worth the time and commitment to invest in yourself.  As leaders, by taking the time to enhance our leadership skills, we have the ability to show up as better leaders, managers, and supervisors. I highly recommend anyone who’s interested to in this or any learning and development opportunity to pore into themselves so they can better pore into others,” said Harrison.

The Senior Executive Fellow program is one of the Forest Service’s competitive leadership development opportunities and offers participants the opportunity to learn from Harvard faculty, including former presidential cabinet members, National Security Council leaders, former political leaders and industry leaders. The program also provides an unparalleled opportunity to network with other senior executives from diverse industries, sectors and countries, facilitating a unique exchange of ideas and perspectives.

“I always knew our work was complex and valued by the American public, but the engagement with over 80 classmates in this program shone a light on just how important the work of the Forest Service is for the future of our country,” said Hayes. “I am grateful to our agency for supporting me in this program and in becoming a better leader.”

The three Forest Service participants spent over 100 hours in classroom instruction (lectures, case studies and simulations) and an equivalent amount of time in reading and external coursework, pushing them to think critically, creatively and strategically. Harvard’s hands-on approach allows participants to apply what they have learned to real-world situations and develop the skills necessary to lead effectively in today’s fast-paced work environment.

“Gratitude is the warmest feeling one can experience, and I am filled with appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the Harvard Senior Executive Fellows Program,” said Ibanez. “Thank you for entrusting me with this invaluable and transformative experience, which I will cherish and use to enhance my personal and professional growth and the growth of my colleagues, friends and family.”
