ALABAMA — The National Forests in Alabama have an innovative mobile app that is changing how the USDA Forest Service communicates with the public.

The app’s leading personality, Eva Longleaf, is a virtual tour guide who assists app users in their adventures on the Bankhead, Conecuh, Talladega and Tuskegee National Forests.

“The forest had an idea to develop a virtual Forest Service tour guide who would communicate what the public can experience while visiting a national forest,” said Tammy Freeman Brown, public affairs officer for the National Forests in Alabama.

Forest visitors that use the mobile app gain access to information on recreation activities, forest history and what is happening in the natural world. The app also provides links to maps, forest alerts, safety messages, links to social media platforms, contact information and more.

“Eva Longleaf is a great source to bridge the gap from the virtual setting to the outdoors. This app is truly a modern-age tool for all ages to learn and explore the various recreational opportunities on the National Forest in Alabama,” said Daks Kennedy, staff officer for recreation, engineering, lands and minerals for the National Forests in Alabama. “We encourage outdoor enthusiasts to download the app to discover what nature has to offer.”

To download the app, go to your mobile device’s app store and search for “Alabama Great Escapes.”

Once downloaded, the app is usable with or without internet services. This capability makes it a great resource in forest areas without great reception.

Along with the "Alabama Great Escapes" mobile app, Forest Service recreation specialists are available to answer questions during regular business hours.

Additionally, maps, passes, discount fees, safety tips, alerts, and recreation information are also available online for visitors of these national forests.
