Glacier Lake Road (#2421) Temporarily Closed to Motorized Vehicles

Closed For Public Safety and Infrastructure Improvements

Release Date: May 20th, 2025

Red Lodge MT—The Custer Gallatin National Forest is issuing a reminder of a current closure on National Forest System Road (NFSR) #2421, also known as Glacier Lake Road. This road is located on the Beartooth Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest, south of Red Lodge, Montana.

The closure affects wheeled motorized vehicles on NFSR #2421 from Limberpine Campground to the end, including all connected NFSR spur roads. The road is gated off beyond Limber Pine Campground. The closure remains in effect through May 30, 2025, unless rescinded.

This closure is essential to ensure public safety as snow melts and to facilitate the replacement of the bridge at Hellroaring Creek, which crosses Glacier Lake Road. Access beyond Limber Pine Campground is restricted by a gate during this period.

"We recognize the importance of Glacier Lake Road for recreational access, particularly during holiday weekends," stated Beartooth District Ranger Amy Haas. "Our foremost priority is the safety of our visitors and the preservation of our natural resources. We appreciate the public's understanding and patience as we work to enhance our infrastructure and ensure safe access in the future."

While Glacier Lake Road is closed, we encourage visitors to explore other open areas for dispersed camping. Parkside Campground, Greenough Lake Campground, and Limber Pine Campground remain open and are prepared to welcome campers throughout the holiday weekend.

For additional information on alternative camping locations and current conditions, please visit the Custer Gallatin National Forest website or contact the Beartooth Ranger District office at 406-446-2103.
