Wilderness Areas

AB wilderness

There are two wilderness areas on the Custer-Gallatin National Forest. The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness.

Get off the beaten path, travel through northwestern South Dakota. Stop for a picnic and see these natural wonders- steep-walled, flat topped buttes rising 200 to 400 feet.

Earthquake Lake Visitor Center

Earthquake Lake Visitor Center

In 1967, the Forest Service’s Earthquake Lake Visitor Center opened its doors for the first season of operation. Today, the center provides interpretive services for more than 50,000 visitors annually. The natural attractions and the easily-seen effects of the strongest earthquake in the Rocky mountains has made this area one of the outstanding scenic and geological study areas in the west.

The OTO Ranch

Completed in fall of 1920, the Lodge opened. As the first dude ranch in the state of Montana, the OTO ranch was one of 26 in Montana and Wyoming at the formation of the "Dude Ranch Association” in 1926.

Historic Main Boulder Ranger Station and Visitor Center

The Main Boulder Ranger Station is one of the oldest facilities in the Forest Service System and has been restored to its original character.
