Situated largely within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, the Gardiner Ranger District covers the southeast part of the Forest and borders the northern part of Yellowstone National Park. The district contains a variety of ecosystems ranging from the broad, meadowed valleys of Slough Creek and Hellroaring Creek to the windswept, lake-spotted high alpine tundra of the Beartooth Plateau. The proximity to the park and the wilderness landscapes offer incredible wildlife habitat throughout the district. The Gardiner district is also well-known in the winter for world-class snowmobiling around Cooke City, MT.
