Winter Sports

Snowmobiling, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, ice fishing, and more!

Skiing/Snowboarding

Whether you are looking for well-groomed beginner or intermediate runs or the steep and deep of a double-black diamond run our national forests offer ski areas that provide a skiing or snowboarding experience that is just right for you. Wolf Creek Ski Area is located on the Rio Grande National Forest and operates under a special use permit.

Back country skiing is also a popular activity on the Rio Grande NF. Before heading out, always be sure to check the weather and the avalanche forecast for the area.

Sledding/Tubing

Sledding can be done pretty much anywhere there is a slope and enough snow. With no "official" sledding areas on the Rio Grande NF, folks tend to find their own sites to sled. Two popular location are near the upper end of Beaver Creek Reservoir and at Wolf Creek Pass.

Be sure to wear the appropriate clothing for your adventure. The weather in Colorado can change rapidly!

Snowmobiling

The Forest Service manages snowmobiling on National Forest lands, allowing it in designated areas while prohibiting it in others, including wilderness areas, and requiring adherence to specific regulations for safety and resource protection. Much of the Rio Grande NF is open to over snow use when there is enough snow.

  • Snowmobiles are prohibited in wilderness areas, Research Natural Areas, and other sensitive areas.
  • Opening and closing dates for snowmobile use can change based on snow conditions, so always check for current Forest Orders or contact local offices.
  • Many snowmobile trails are maintained through partnerships with state agencies, local snowmobile clubs, and the Forest Service
  • Snowmobiles must be registered with Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
  • Before heading out, always be sure to check the weather and the avalanche forecast for the area. Visit the Colorado Avalanche Information Center

XC Skiing/Snowshoeing

If the crowds at ski resorts aren’t for you, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing can be a great way to enjoy the solitude of National Forests in winter. The Rio Grande NF partners with organization to groom trails.
