Volunteers

The Forest Service uses volunteers for a variety of programs. Some volunteers work full-time for several months, while others donate a few hours each week or contribute a one-time service. Students may volunteer to earn college credits through a college-approved intern program, or to become familiar with Forest Service activities and philosophy. Many individuals have found that their volunteer experience has guided them towards job interest and possible careers. Retirees often find volunteering gives them a new opportunity to share their skills. The types of projects volunteers work on depend on our funding, what needs to get done and the complexity of the project. We have many opportunities for volunteers including:

  • Maintaining and hosting campgrounds on the forest
  • Staffing visitor and information centers
  • Trail maintenance
  • Refurbishing cabins
  • Installing wildlife guzzlers
  • Various building projects

Check out opportunities to volunteer at www.volunteer.gov or call any of our district offices to inquire about potential volunteer opportunities on the Fishlake National Forest. You may also download the volunteer agreement below and take it to the forest office where you are interested in volunteering.

 Volunteer Agreement

Volunteers do not receive a salary or hourly wage. Volunteers must be signed up through an official Volunteer Service Agreement (OF-301a), or work through a Forest Service partner organization.

Youth Conservation Corps

The United States Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is a summer youth employment program for young people, ages 15 to 18. YCC crew members serve in teams on national forests, parks, and wildlife refuges on projects that promote awareness and appreciation of the public lands' legacy and the nation's natural, cultural and historic resources. YCC Projects include building and repairing trails, facility and campground maintenance, restoration and reforestation, wildlife monitoring, and more. Crew members are exposed to hard work and team building and learn about environmental stewardship and civic responsibility. YCC is a legislatively authorized program of the Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Park Service.
