Firefighters continued working through hot spots on the Horse Fire, battling to reach these areas in thick snag patches and steep ravines overnight and into Monday morning.

The fire is located near Schell Mountain, west of Lakehead Ca., in the 2018 Carr Fire footprint.  Firefighters are engaging in a full suppression strategy, with firefighter safety our top priority. The fire remained mapped at 385 acres with 60% containment Monday morning.

Our control objectives are to keep the fire south of Stacey Creek, west of the Shasta Lake District boundary, north of Wild Cow Mountain Ridge and trail, and east of Clear Creek.

Today’s priorities include working to clear brush in a patch of snags on the northwest side of the fire, improving control lines, mitigating hazard trees along the control lines and roadsides and mop-up in areas where smoke and heat have been detected.

The Horse Fire presents special challenges, notably its steep terrain and hot temperatures. Since most of the fire footprint is in an old burn scar and a previous logging area, many of the places where firefighters are working is sun-exposed. Temperatures have been reaching the low- to mid-90s for the past several days, and higher heat is expected in the area later this week.

“Night shift had a really good shift, trying to get into the areas where they could and mop up areas of concern,” said Ryan Regelin, assistant district fire management officer for the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. “Today we’re hoping to get the mop-up depth of up to 200 to 250 feet today (into the burn area).”
