Reforestation for Green Ridge, Lick Creek, and Elbow Creek Fires
Status: Implementation Ongoing
Reforestation is an important part of helping the landscape recover following the 2021 Green Ridge, Lick Creek and Elbow Creek Fires. Overall, the Pomeroy and Walla Walla Ranger Districts has identified approximately 5,800 acres for potential planting within the footprints of the fires where burn intensity was moderate to high. Forest Service staff will survey these sites over several years to determine appropriate planting needs. Tree planting is scheduled to begin in 2023 with more than 350,000 seedlings planted on approximately 2,300 acres. Tree species will consist of a diverse mix of native plants, including western larch, Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and western white pine.
Additional acreage will be contracted in subsequent years and updated at that time.
Pomeroy Danger Tree and Fire Salvage Project
Status: Decision Signed
The Pomeroy Danger Tree and Fire Salvage project proposes to remove danger and hazard trees that threaten public health and safety along travel routes and within developed recreation sites; restore portions of the landscape burned by the Green Ridge and Lick Creek Fires through reforestation; and recover forest economic value and benefits through salvage harvest. Trees that are removed may be sold through commercial timber sales, offered to the public as firewood, or used onsite for stream and habitat rehabilitation.
