Hiking

The Willamette National Forest has nearly 1,700 miles of trail. While many are in wilderness areas, a number of trails are low-elevation, easy-access trails for year-round hiking.

Five scenic low-elevation trails have been designated as National Recreation Trails for their scenic and recreation values.

  • Fall Creek National Recreation Trail
  • McKenzie River National Recreation Trail
  • Lava River National Recreation Trail
  • Middle Fork Willamette National Recreation Trail
  • South Breitenbush Gorge National Recreation Trail

The Willamette National Forest has eight wilderness areas, most of which are near major mountain peaks in the Oregon Cascades. While trail maps on the website give you an idea of the length and difficulty of wilderness trails, they are not adequate to prepare you for a wilderness trip.

Know Before You Go! Check our Responsible Recreation page to guide you in trip planning and help you think through the items you should consider to make your trip as enjoyable and safe as possible.
