Ice Age Blowdown
Frozen ground salvage harvest of dead and dying trees as a result of a wind storm in July 2011. Reconstruction of old woods road (about 3800?) for temporary winter access, to be decommissioned following project completion. Temporary winter road construction (less than ¼ mile) would be needed for access to the salvage area south of the river (Unit 1). The salvage prescription would leave mostly an open stand with some standing undamaged trees remaining. This should closely resemble a shelterwood harvest with patches of clearcut. Natural regeneration to hardwood is expected to occur. There is sugar maple, basswood, white ash and red oak in the understory, less than 2' tall. The reroute location of the Ice Age Trail traverses all 3 units. The new bridge and planned river crossing for the trail is in the heart of the blowdown, unit 3, and the area needs to be cleared in order for the bridge placement and construction to take place.
