Bayfield Peninsula Hydrogeology Geological Sampling

The Forest Service and Wisconsin Geological Natural History Survey (WGNHS) are proposing to drill up to 4 boreholes to collect and describe the sediment in the Bayfield Peninsula to better understand the area hydrogeology. Field data from the boreholes helps to improve descriptions and maps of glacial materials, bedrock geology, and elevation data. Data from the drilling a rotosonic core sample fills in gaps for groundwater aquifer characterization and glacial mapping, which ultimately will improve management of the resources in the Forest. The results of the two core samples drilled in 2019 show additional sampling would be beneficial. There is currently funding to drill one sample in 2022, results from that sample would show if another hole is needed. Four potential drill locations are being proposed for review in this project. The additional sites could be use if more funding becomes available or as back-up locations has an unforeseeable problem, such as bedrock or large boulders. Each sample has a disturbance area of about 50 x 150 feet.
