    36 CFR 261.56 – Use of Vehicles Off National Forest System Roads When prohibited by an order, it is prohibited to possess or use a vehicle off National Forest System Roads. For the purpose of this order, “motorized vehicles” do not include snowmobiles. 

    For the purpose of this order the following are prohibited: 

    A. Use of motor vehicles off designated National Forest System Roads for dispersed camping is only allowed within 300’ of those routes designated for dispersed camping on the Gallatin NF Motor Vehicle Use Maps published June 1, 2008. Cross country travel within a narrow corridor of the routes designated on the Motor Vehicle Use Maps is only permissible within 300’ of those designated routes for camping, and no other reason. Travel to campsites must not create resource damage. Please see the 3 Motor Vehicle Use Maps for those designated routes, and areas where dispersed camping within 300’ of the designated route is permissible. Camping with motor vehicles at any other location must be at designated sites only.

Occupancy and Use Restrictions

On Motorized Wheeled or Tracked Cross Country Vehicle Travel Gallatin National Forest

Region One

Pursuant to Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations 261.50 (a) and (b), the following restrictions are in effect on the entire Gallatin National Forest. These restrictions are in addition to those enumerated in Subpart A, part 261, Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations, and become effective when signed and will remain in effect until rescinded.

36 CFR 261.56 – Use of Vehicles Off National Forest System Roads

When prohibited by an order, it is prohibited to possess or use a vehicle off National Forest System Roads. For the purpose of this order, “motorized vehicles” do not include snowmobiles.

Exemptions:

Pursuant to Title 36 CFR 261.50 (e), the following persons are exempt from this order:

 

  1. Any person with a permit authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.
  2. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.

Penalty:

Violations of these Prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. [16 U.S.C. 551, and 18 U.S.C. 3559 and 3571]
