Our Firefighters
Hand Crews
There are three primary types of firefighting crews, Type 1, Type 2 IA, and Type 2. All crews have a mixture of men and women totaling 18 to 20 crewmembers. Hand crews construct firelines around wildfires to control them, burn out fire areas, and mop up after fires.
Engine Crews
Engine crews range in size from two to ten firefighters. They work with specialized wildland fire engines that carry special equipment to spray water and foam.
Rappelers
Gallatin Rappel Crew
Helitack crews are teams of firefighters who are transported by helicopter to wildfires and may land near them or, if equipped and trained, may rappel from a hovering helicopter.
West Yellowstone Smokejumpers
Smokejumpers are trained to jump out of airplanes getting to fires fast before they have a chance to get big.
