Can I have a campfire?

Stage 1 restrictions allow open flames in developed areas only

Release Date: September 11, 2025

Granby, Colo. (Sept. 11, 2025) — Due to improved conditions, fire restrictions have been lowered to Stage 1 on the Arapaho National Forest in Grand County. Under Stage 1 restrictions, campfires are allowed in developed, hosted campgrounds and picnic areas (typically where a fee is paid for use).

Campfires are still banned in dispersed camping areas, such as areas where car camping is popular along Forest Service roads and in backcountry wilderness sites. In these areas, visitors may use liquid or gas fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices with on/off switches on surfaces cleared of all flammable materials within 3 feet of the device.

Violation of Stage 1 fire restrictions could result in a maximum fine of $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.

Visit the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland’s Alerts page to find a list of sites where campfires are allowed and other useful information to help plan your trip.
