Off Highway Vehicles (OHV)
There are many opportunities on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest for OHV Riding. This diverse forest offers a variety of opportunities for many different skill levels and types of riding. Two of the more popular areas include routes located on the Shasta Lake Ranger District and on the Hayfork Ranger District.
Remember, off-highway vehicle recreation is one of many uses allowed on public land. Other popular uses include hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain bike riding, horseback riding, target shooting, and sight-seeing. Please be considerate of all others you encounter throughout the forest. Always slow down and yield the right-of-way to non-motorized recreationists.
- All riders must obey all California State OHV Regulations. Please visit their website.
- It is your responsibility to obtain all required and appropriate maps and to stay on routes approved for OHV use.
- Remember, only street legal vehicles are allowed below the high water mark on Shasta Lake.
The Forest Service in cooperation with the State of California Off-Highway Vehicle Fund, (Green Sticker), has developed roads, trails, and facilities for further enjoyment of the OHV user. Remember, these are your facilities and OHV funds are being used to develop and maintain them. Please visit the state OHV website.

Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM)
Motor Vehicle Use Maps are the official map for designating all roads, trails and areas available for public motorized travel on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. While other maps are available for trip planning purposes, the MVUM is the official map indicating where motor vehicle use is legal on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. They are available for free from any Shasta-Trinity National Forest Office or digital download here. Miles of riding await you!
Whether it’s brushing a trail, placing a sign, or patrolling with an OHV Ranger, there are many volunteer opportunities within the OHV Program. Please call the OHV Coordinator at (530) 226-2500 for more information.

OHV Trail Riding
Shasta Lake Ranger District
The Bagley Area OHV Routes include a series of recommended loops that are appropriate for a variety of skill levels and OHV types. While the loops are most suited for ATV and UTV recreation, motorcycle riders can still find some challenging sections of trail. The Bagley Area Map is still in development. However, the OHV Coordinator is happy to recommend routes. Please call (530)-226-2500 and ask for the OHV Coordinator. You may also use the Shasta Lake Motor Vehicle Use Map to plan a route.
OHV Camping
There are many dispersed camping opportunities but if you prefer a more developed setting, these primitive campgrounds are available.
For the Hayfork area:
- Basin Gulch Campground
Located in a thickly wooded area within walking distance of Middle Fork Cottonwood Creek, this shady campground is perfect for tents and small trailers 20ft or shorter. It is a great starting point for your OHV adventures into the National Forest! - Beegum Gorge Campground
This tiny, tents only campground is located near Beegum Creek. Partially shaded, this is a great home base for your adventures! Be aware - there are vault toilets available, but no water.
For the Shasta Lake area:
- Chirpchatter Campground
Located east of Shasta Lake, these remote campsites offer the perfect spot to relax. Forested and shady, this is a perfect home base for your OHV adventures! Be aware, the maximum trailer size is 24ft and Fenders Ferry is a rough, unimproved dirt road. - Deadlun Campground
Located on the bank of Iron Canyon Reservoir north of Big Bend, this campground is a wonderful hideaway. From here, Forest routes and OHV trails can be taken toward Lake McCloud or down towards Shasta Lake. This is a wonderful campground to base your OHV adventures from!
