Upper Clackamas Corridor Campground Redesign
Riverside Fire damage
The 2020 Riverside Fire impacted more than a hundred thousand acres on Clackamas River Ranger District and burned many campgrounds, day use areas, trails, administrative buildings, and more. It will continue to take many years for the Forest to recover.
Riverside, Rainbow, Ripplebrook, Armstrong, and Riverford Campgrounds have been repaired and reopened and are being operated by a concessionaire.
Upper Clackamas Corridor Campground Redesign
The Mt. Hood National Forest has been partnering with the National Forest Foundation to redesign seven campgrounds along the Upper Clackamas River: Indian Henry, Fish Creek, Lazy Bend, Carter Bridge, Lockaby, Roaring River, and Sunstrip.
The designs identify opportunities to reconfigure and modernize recreation sites to meet growing demand while also providing high-quality and sustainable recreation opportunities into the future. The site’s changed conditions are fully considered in the proposed designs and ensure protection of the scenic, natural, and cultural resources. Additionally, development will retain the natural and rustic character our visitors expect on Forest Service lands while also providing a welcoming and safe environment for a wide spectrum of users and families.
- Includes seven sites – Lazy Bend, Armstrong, Roaring River, Carter Bridge, Fish Creek, Indian Henry, and Sunstrip
- Work is being done in partnership with National Forest Foundation
- Tribal and public engagement efforts in 2025 informed first phase of design work.
- FS has conceptual plans for all of the sites (we could consider sharing a link to concept plans) and will be completing design and developing construction packages for the sites in 2026
- Goal is to begin construction in 2027
- Forest Service and partners are looking at additional funding opportunities for construction
Fish Creek Day Use Area & Boat Launch
- Partnership with National Forest Foundation
- Engagement with whitewater community, outfitter and guides, and accessibility advocates in 2025 to develop conceptual plans for site
- Environmental analysis and Tribal consultation and continued design development in 2026
- Implementation timeline dependent on consultation and design timeline, permitting requirements
