Fall Prescribed Burning

Umpqua National Forest is planning for fall prescribed burning. Work is estimated to occur between October 2, 2026 and October 19, 2026, as conditions allow. Certified prescribed fire specialists use prescribed fires to help remove excess vegetation, reduce wildfire risk, improve habitat, and restore fire-adapted ecosystems. 

Diamond Lake Ranger District

Underburning is planned for the following areas:

• Cold Spring Unit 32/33 – National Forest Service Road (NFSR) 3401-200, Upper Thorn Prairie
• Cold Spring 121 – NFSR 3401-600, Thorn Prairie

Closure Information: No closures are associated with Diamond Lake Ranger District prescribed fire activity. However, visitors should remain alert in the area were firefighters will be working.

Tiller Ranger District

Underburning is planned for the following area:

• Unit 710, Long Prairie – Along National Forest Service Road 3201-300, west of Threehorn Campground.

Closure Information: A closure around Unit 710 Long Prairie prescribed fire will be in place for firefighter and public safety. Closed access areas include:

• at the junction of NFSR 32-300 
• at the junction of NFSR 600-620 
• at the junction of NFSR 300-330 (Diamond Rock)
• at the junction of NFSR 1616-205

Smoke Information
While smoke may be visible, the Forest works closely with air quality specialists and closely monitors smoke during prescribed fires. Prescribed fires are timed for best smoke management. Visit Airnow.gov for current air quality information. If smoke is present on roadways, drivers should slow down and turn on headlights. Please do not report these fires, as firefighters will remain on scene throughout ignitions and patrol afterwards.

Additional Notifications:
The Forest will evaluate conditions in the days and hours before ignition. If conditions are not favorable, planned prescribed fire activities may be postponed or canceled, more information will be posted here or on the Forest Facebook page.
