Clarion River Campsites

Twenty-seven primitive, numbered campsites are dotted along the Clarion Wild and Scenic River from Irwin Run up to and along Millstone Creek. Campsites can be reached via River Road and FR 132. In this area, dispersed camping is only allowed at the numbered sites. You will find 18 campsites along the Clarion River and nine campsites along Millstone Creek.

Each campsite has a hardened parking spot and a rock fire ring. Information signs and vault toilets are located at Irwin Run, Robin Island, and Millstone Creek Canoe Launches.

General Information

Camping

Camping is allowed only at the twenty-seven primitive, numbered campsites. 

These first-come, first-served campsites are reached via River Road and FR 132. In this area, dispersed camping is only allowed at the numbered sites. 

You will find 18 campsites along the Clarion River and nine campsites along Millstone Creek.

Each campsite has a hardened parking spot and a rock fire ring. Information signs and vault toilets are located at Irwin Run, Robin Island, and Millstone Creek Canoe Launches.

When you visit

As a visitor to the National Forest, you are asked to follow certain rules designed to protect the Forest, natural resources and to provide for public safety of visitors. These rules are available to you online or at any office of the Allegheny National Forest. Please take time to read and understand them. General Topic orders apply across the Forest.

Occupancy and Use:

  • Sites are first-come, first-served.
  • Sites cannot be “reserved” by leaving equipment on the site.
  • All sites must be occupied the first night and in each 24 hour period afterwards.
  • Sites may be occupied for 14 days in a 30-day period. After 14 days, visitors must leave the Allegheny National Forest until the 30th day has passed.
  • No more than 8 people per site.

Campfires 

  • must be in a fire ring and fully extinguished when you leave the campsite.
  • One fire ring per campsite.
  • Use dead and down wood for campfires, do not cut live trees.
  • Do not bring firewood from outside of Warren, McKean, Forest, or Elk County

No Fees are required for this site.

Boating

When boating with your dog, follow all Pennsylvania State boating laws.

  • Use care when getting your dog in and out of the boat to ensure their safety.
  • Consider both you and your dog wearing a life jacket.
  • Provide shade for your pet.
  • Remember to bring their food and water as it may be unsafe for them to drink lake water.

Camping

  • Keep dogs on a six-foot, or shorter, leash when they are not inside a tent.
  • Store dog food in bear-resistant containers and feed your pet away from the campsite.
  • Pick up and bag your dog’s waste. Place it in a provided trash receptacle or pack it out.
  • Do not leave your dog unattended at any time.
  • Keep your dog in your tent at night.
  • Ensure that there is ample water available for your pet.

Trail Use

Dogs are allowed on hiking trails, as long as they are kept on a leash. Unleashed dogs can pose a danger to your pet, the natural resources of the area, and other forest visitors.

Directions

From Marienville

  • Turn onto South Forest Street (SR 3002) and follow it approximately 6 miles to Loleta Recreation Area.
  • Cross Millstone Creek and turn right (SW) onto Millstone Road (FR 132), across from the entrance to the Loleta Day Use area.
  • Follow Millstone Road towards the Clarion River.
  • Camping starts on the right after the pipeline, with sites numbered from M9 to M1.
  • At the intersection of Millstone Road and River Road, go straight (S) to get to the Clarion River Campsites, numbered C1 to C17.

From Cook Forest

  • Turn from SR 36 east onto River Road.
  • Cross SR 899 - a right (SE) onto SR 899 and then left (E) onto River Road (SR 2006) at Clarington.
  • Go through Clarington and continue on River Road to the stop sign at Millstone Road (FR 132).
  • Turn right (S) to continue on River road and access campsites C1 to C17 or turn left (N) to access Millstone campsites M1 to M9.

From I-80 Eastbound

  • Take Exit 73 to get onto SR 949. Stay on SR 949 until its intersection with SR 3001 (approximately 16 miles).
  • Turn left (N) and cross the bridge over the Clarion River.
  • Turn left (W) for campsites C4-C1 and M1-M9.
  • Turn Right (E) for campsites C5-C17.

From I-80 Westbound

  • Take exit 78 to get onto SR 36.
  • Follow SR 36 approximately 8 miles to SR 949.
  • Turn right (E) onto SR 949 and follow it approximately 8.5 miles to Bridge Road.
  • Cross the Clarion River (N) on Bridge Road.
  • Turn left (W) onto River Road for sites C4- C1 and M1-M9.
  • Turn Right (E) onto River Road for sites C5-C17.

Parking

Vehicles may not be driven more than 50 feet from a hard road. Park on the spur provided if one exists.

Restrooms

Restrooms are not available at this site.

Sanitation

  • All trash must be packed out.
  • Do not place in fire ring to burn.
  • Partially burned trash attracts wildlife and may make the site hazardous.

Vault toilets at Irwin Run, Robin Island, and Millstone. Use these facilities instead of typical methods such as catholes. Protect sensitive river resources. Self-contained portable toilets can be used but waste must go to an approved dump station.
