Campground: Sunset Falls Campground and Day Use Open to Visitor Campground is open year-round. During the season sixty percent of the sites are available by reservation only. During the off-season, beginning September 19, 2021, all sites are available on a first come, first serve basis until the season starts again in June. Campground: Takhlakh Lake Closed to Visitor 12/20/2021: Takhlakh Lake campground is now closed for the season and inaccessible due to snow. A $5 Northwest Forest Pass/Interagency Pass is required to park at the Day Use site during the busy season but is not required at this time.

Cascade Peaks Interpretive Station Closed to Visitor 10/14/21: Both the interpretive station and vault restrooms are closed.

Climbers Bivouac Trailhead Closed to Visitor 11/05/2021: Climbers Bivouac is closed for the winter and will reopen in summer of 2022. Marble Mountain Sno-Park must be used to climb Mount St. Helens. Winter climbing permits are self-serve at the climbing register. 
Coldwater Lake Picnic and Boating Site Closed to Visitor 1/11/22: Due to heavy snow, Coldwater Lake is not currently accessible. The restrooms at the picnic site are closed due to vandalism. When accessible, restrooms at the boat launch remain available.
Crab Creek Trailhead Open to Visitor 9/16/2021: Parking Reservation Tickets are no longer required at TH. In 2022, Parking Reservation Tickets will again be required from mid June to mid September. These tickets will be available from Recreation.gov for a $2 processing fee. For information contact Mt. Adams Ranger District 509-395-3402.

Forest Road 21 Open to Visitor Open to Johnson Creek Sno-Park. Upper portion of Forest Road 21 is closed to motorized wheeled vehicles between December 1st and April 1st.

Forest Road 2329 Closed to Visitor 12/16/2021: Road is closed to motorized wheeled vehicles for the winter season. Contact Mt. Adams Ranger District 509-395-3402 or Cowlitz Valley Ranger District 360-497-1103.
Forest Road 24 Closed to Visitor 12/01/2021: Forest Road 24 is legally closed from Dec. 1 - March 31 for Winter recreation use only. Contact Mt. Adams District 509-395-3402 for current info.
Forest Road 25 Open to Visitor 12/15/2021: Open to Wakepish Sno-Park. A portion of Forest Road 25 is closed for the winter season just past the 25/99 junction on the north side, and just past Muddy River Viewpoint on the south end.
Forest Road 26 Closed to Visitor 12/01/2021: Road is closed and gated for the Winter and Spring season (typically mid to late June)
Forest Road 2750 Open to Visitor 7/1/2021: Open high clearance regular size vehicles only. Not suitable for trailers. No current report on trail conditions.
Forest Road 28 Open to Visitor 10/4/2021: Road is open. Drive with caution; road may be rough in spots.
Forest Road 2801 Closed to Visitor 11/15/2021: The 2801 is washed out about .5 miles from the junction of Forest Road 28 and 2801.
Forest Road 30/Wind River Highway Open to Visitor 01/13/2022:Road has been plowed. Only open to Lone Butte snow park. In the winter Wind River Hwy. (FR 30) is plowed regularly to the Sno-Park. Expect FR 30 to be blocked by snow past that point until late Spring. Contact Mt. Adams Ranger District for current information (509) 395-3402.
Forest Road 41 Open to Visitor 8/7/2021: FR 41 is rough and dangerous. High clearance vehicle recommended. Low speed recommended. Spur 406 is closed because it is impassable. Contact Mt. Adams Ranger District for current information 509-395-3402.
Forest Road 4109 Closed to Visitor The road is impassable with two and a half foot deep ruts in spots. Silver Star trail can be accessed from the DNR Grouse Vista Trailhead (Discover Pass required).For further information call Mt. Adams Ranger District (509) 395-3402.

Forest Road 48 Open to Visitor 10/4/2021 This route is marginally passable to high-clearance vehicles only. Trailers are not recommended.
Forest Road 51 /Curly Creek Cut-off Open to Visitor 9/23/2021: Log hauling is happening on FR 51 at this time. In the winter for road condition updates check the Skamania county.org website, Public Works link. For information contact Mt. Adams Ranger Station 509-395-2021.
Forest Road 52/Skate Creek Road Closed to Visitor 12/16/2021: Road is closed to motorized wheeled vehicles for the winter season. Call Cowlitz Valley Ranger District for current information: 360-497-1100.
Forest Road 54/ Canyon Creek Closed to Visitor 01/07/2022: Due to recent weather events a landslide has occurred on the 54 road. The road is intact but impassible and not recommended to travel on until it has been cleared. Contact the Mt. Adams Ranger District for current info. 509-395-3402.
Forest Road 56 Closed to Visitor 12/1/2021: Closed. Road is closed to motorized wheeled vehicles between December 1st and April 1st.
Forest Road 5603 Closed to Visitor 12/1/2021: Closed. Road is closed to motorized wheeled vehicles between December 1st and April 1st.
Forest Road 5701 Open to Visitor 10/26/2021: Road is open. Siouxon trailhead has moved 2 miles west on Forest Road 5701. Please park perpendicular to make room for others. The last few miles of 5701 are now closed to vehicles due to safety concerns related to Big Hollow Fire impacts. Please review safety tips for burned areas.  
Forest Road 59 Closed to Visitor 10/4/2021: Closed due to several LARGE washouts. Road will not be back in service for 2-3 years.
Forest Road 60 Closed to Visitor 12/13/2021; FR 60 is now closed at the forest boundary for winter recreation through March. Those staying at Peterson Prairie Cabin will need to park at Atkinsson snow park (HWY 141 is plowed up until this point). Contact Mt. Adams Ranger District 509-395-3402 for current information.
Forest Road 63 Closed to Visitor 10/5/2021: Beginning October 11th there will be heavy truck traffic on forest road 63 from mile marker 9 to mile marker 12 while road repairs are being made to the slide area. The work will last at least a few weeks.
Forest Road 65 Open to Visitor 6/20/2021: NOTE: Rd. 65. has a short section of flood damage just past Falls Creek Horse Camp. Access to Thomas Lake TH is passable by a higher clearance vehicle (Ex.Truck or SUV) otherwise go to Thomas Lake TH via Rd. 6507. Contact Mt. Adams Ranger District for current info. 509-395-3402.
Forest Road 66 Open to Visitor 5/26/2021: FR 66 is open from Willard to FR 60. Drive cautiously as there are many potholes. A section of the pavement has collapsed on the west side of the road south the junction with the gravel section. Area is marked with a traffic cone. Contact Mt. Adams Ranger District 509-395-3402 for current information.
Forest Road 75 Closed to Visitor 10/4/2021: Road damage at MP 3.1. Drivable but not recommended. Road has slumped and there is a washout on roadway/shoulder.
Forest Road 76 Open to Visitor 10/4/2021: Open. Paved road with some large potholes; drive with caution.
Forest Road 80 and 8040 Open to Visitor 11/15/2021: Open. FR 80 is mostly one lane and paved. FR 8040 has washboard and potholes. High Clearance is recommended. The Mt. Adams Climbing permit system changed last season to online purchase only. Purchase your digital pass at Recreation.gov/activitypass/mt-adams-climb Purchase your pass before coming to Trout Lake because the area lacks cell coverage. Forest Road 81 Open to Visitor 11/11/2021: Forest Road 81 is snow covered and not recomennded for low clearance or rear wheel drive vehicles. Visitors should be prepared to encounter snow and winter weather. Use caution when driving.
Forest Road 8123 Open to Visitor 06/07/2021: Forest Road 81 rough getting to 8123. 8123 remains washed out less than a mile in.

Forest Road 83 Open to Visitor 01/10/22: The landslide on FR83 has been cleared and the road has been plowed to Marble Mountain Sno-Park. However, sections of the road are icy and narrow, permitting only one lane of traffic. Visitors are advised to use extreme caution when traveling on FR83. Forest Road 83 is now gated at Marble Mountain Sno-Park. Visitors will not be able to drive to June Lake, Ape Canyon, Lava Canyon, or Lahar Viewpoint until the road reopens in spring. Anticipate snow and winter conditions on Forest Road 83. The road is not recommended for low clearance or rear wheel drive vehicles. No parking allowed on Forest Road 83.   
Forest Road 8322 Open to Visitor 06/04/2021: Forest Road 8322 is a ROUGH road. Recommended for 4x4s with high clearance.
Forest Road 84 Open to Visitor 10/4/2021: Open; Road conditions unknown. Drive with caution - some potholes and rocks on road.
Forest Road 85 Open to Visitor 10/4/2021: Road damage at MP 3.3. Drivable. Roadway failure on portion of road. Watch for log trucks. High Clearance 4 x 4 recommended.
Forest Road 88 Closed to Visitor 12/13/2021; Road is now closed for travel. Now through March 31 Rd. 88 is open for winter recreation use only beginning at Flattop Sno-Park. Contact the Mt. Adams Ranger District for current info. 509-395-3402.
Forest Road 90 Open to Visitor 12/13/2021; Upper elevation's of FR 90 are now blocked by snow and unsafe for driving. The road is plowed to Curly Creek Rd. Contact Mt. Adams Ranger District for additional information (509)395-3402.

Forest Road 99 Closed to Visitor 12/01/2021: Forest Road 99 is closed for the season.
Harmony Falls Viewpoint Closed to Visitor 10/20/2021: Closed until next season.
Horse Camp: Cody Closed to Visitor 9/22/2021: Cody Horse Camp is now closed for the season. All sites are first come first serve.
Horse Camp: Falls Creek Open to Visitor 8/7/2021: The campground is open. For further information contact Mt. Adams Ranger Station 509-395-3402.
Horse Camp: Keenes Closed to Visitor 9/22/2021: Keenes Horse Camp is now closed for the season. All sites are first come first serve.
Horse Camp: Lewis River Closed to Visitor 10/20/2021; Campground is closed for the season. A parking reservation ticket is no longer required to park in the adjacent parking area. In 2022, from mid June to mid September a parking reservation ticket will again be required to park in the lot. Reservation tickets will be available from Recreation.gov. Horse Camp: Mt. Adams Closed to Visitor 10/20/2021: Mt. Adams Horse Camp is closed for the season. For further information contact the Mt. Adams ranger Station 509-395-3402.
Horse Camp: Walupt Closed to Visitor 9/22/2021: Walupt Horse Camp is now closed for the season. All sites are first come first serve.
Huckleberry Access Open to Visitor 10/27/2021: Huckleberries ripen in late summer/early autumn. Please remember to get your free-use huckleberry picking permit online at https://apps.fs.usda.gov/gp for information contact Mt. Adams Ranger Station 509-395-3402
Interpretive Site: Berry Fields Open to Visitor 6/20/2021: FR 24 to the Berry Fields is snow free. For further information contact Mt. Adams Ranger Station 509-395-3402.
Interpretive Site: Layser Cave Open to Visitor 10/4/2021: Open. Road to trailhead is steep. Trail may be hard to find due to overgrown brush. Current conditions unknown.
Johnston Ridge Observatory Closed to Visitor 12/01/21: Johnston Ridge Obveratory is closed, and SR 504 Spirit Lake Highway to Johnston Ridge Observatory is gated for winter. Check weather forecast for the Johnston Ridge area (4,000 foot elevation). 
Kalama Horse Camp Campground Closed to Visitor 11/17/21: Kalama Horse Camp is closed for the winter. Restrooms are locked and unavailable for use. Visitors accessing the trailhead will need to park outside of the Horse Camp and continue on foot. 
Lava Canyon Interpretive Site Closed to Visitor 12/05/2021: Due to deep snow, Lava Canyon Interpretive Site is closed until spring 2022. Forest Road 83 to Lava Canyon is gated and will reopen spring 2022. Upper trail open. Lower Lava Canyon Trail closed until trail maintenance can be completed. The Lava Canyon Bridge remains closed until further notice, but the first steel bridge is open so both sides of the river can be accessed.
Lewis River Recreation Area Open to Visitor The Lewis River Recreation Area (LRRA) is a fourteen mile stretch of Forest Road 90 starting just east of the Speed Trail and ending just west of Summit Prairie Trailhead. Reservations are required seasonally, from mid June to mid September, to park within the LRRA.

Loowit #216- Castle Ridge to Sheep Canyon Trail Closed to Visitor 10/20/2021: Recreation sites along FR99 are closed until next season.
Loowit #216- Ptarmigan to June Lake Trail Closed to Visitor 10/20/2021: Recreation sites along FR99 are closed until next season.
Loowit #216- Sheep Canyon to Butte Camp Trail Open to Visitor 09/15/2021:  The trail is open and clear of snow. Forest Road 99 is open. Reports will start apppearing on the Washington Trails Association website.      
Loowit Trail #216- Ape Canyon to Windy Trail Open to Visitor 09/15/2021:  The trail is open and free of snow. Forest Road 99 is open. Check Washington Trails Association website for current reports.   
Loowit Trail #216- June Lake to Ape Canyon Trail Open to Visitor 10/20/2021: Recreation sites along FR99 are closed until next season.
Loowit Trail #216- Windy to Castle Ridge Trail Closed to Visitor 10/20/2021: Recreation sites along FR99 are closed until next season.
Meta Lake Interpretive Site Closed to Visitor 10/20/2021: Closed until next season.
Monitor Ridge Climbing Route Closed to Visitor 11/05/2021: The trailhead for Monitor Ridge Climbing Route, Climber's Bivouac, is closed for the winter. Climbers should use the Marble Mountain Sno-Park trailhead to access the Worm Flows Winter Climbing Route. 
Mount Margaret Backcountry Open to Visitor 10/13/21: Snow has fallen throughout the Mount Margaret Backcountry. Expect snowy or slushy hiking conditions, which may be hazardous in some parts of the MMBC. Lakes Trail #211 is very brushy in places. Trails traverse steep terrain; use caution. Overnight camping requires a permit. Fires are prohibited year-round.
Mount St. Helens East: Forest Roads 25 & 99 Closed to Visitor 12/09/2021: Forest Roads 25 and 99 are now closed for the season. 
Mount St. Helens South: Forest Roads 83 & 81 Open to Visitor 11/11/2021:
  • Forest Roads 81 and 83 are snow covered. Visitors should anticipate snow and winter conditions and drive with caution.
  • Forest Road 83 open. No parking allowed on the road.
  • Forest Road 81 open, but very rough. Drive with caution.
  • Forest Road 830 to Climber's Bivouac is gated normally until mid-June to the beginning of July, depending on when the road melts out.
  • Forest Road 8303 to Ape Cave and beyond is closed at Trail of Two Forests. Ape Cave is closed for the season and will open spring of 2022.
Mount St. Helens West: State Highway 504 Open to Visitor 1/11/22: SR504 is closed at milepost 13.5 east of Toutle due to an emergency sinkhole repair. Visitors should anticipate delays and use an alternate route to bypass the repair site. SR504 has been plowed to Elk Rock, but the road is narrow and visitors should anticipate ice and winter hazards. The road conditions are still hazardous with about 8 inches of ice still covering road ways.  SR 504 to Johnston Ridge Observatory is closed and gated for the season.
Mount St. Helens area Open to Visitor
  • State Route 504 is closed at at milepost 45, near Coldwater Lake. A sink hole is blocking traffic in both directions just east of Toutle.
  • Forest Road 83 open to Marble Mountain Sno*Park.
  • Forest Road 830 to Climber's Bivouac is closed.
  • Forest Road 81 closed.
  • Forest Road 25 is closed.
  • Forest Road 99 to Windy Ridge is closed.

Sno-Park: Marble Mountain Open to Visitor 1/10/22: ALERT: There was a report of a significant avalanche on the Muddy River-Plains of Abraham. Forest Road 83 to Cougar Snow Park is now open. Expect icy conditions along the road. Due to heavy snow conditions, the shelter and restroom at Marble Mountain are very difficult to access and visitors will not be able to hook up generators. Many visitors are reporting that it is difficult to navigate even the groomed snowmobile trails without becoming stuck. Traction tires, chains and/or 4WD HIGHLY recommended and drivers still proceed with caution.
  • To protect the mountain environment, please bring your own blue bags. Only a small supply is provided, and they run out quickly.
  •  A good resource to see forecasts is this National Weather Service site or Mountain Forecast.com. Elevation at Marble is 2,600 feet. 83 is gated for the winter just past the sno-park. Conditions can change quickly. Always be prepared.

  • 11/19/21: Full winter conditions exist on the mountain; mountaineering skills and equipment required. The latest climbing report is on the Mount St. Helens Institute website under Current Conditions
  • Safety Alert: A cornice (giant, overhanging mass of snow) forms every year at the summit and can release at any time, plunging into the crater. Stay well back from the edge and don't trust footprints you see.
  • Marble Mountain Warming Shelter open. Restrooms available. Pack out your trash, please. Please bring your own blue bags due to limited supply at the trailhead.
  • Practice social distancing at the trailhead and along the climbing route. Do not congregate at the summit or in the parking lot.
