Your national forests and grasslands are 193 million acres of vast, scenic beauty waiting for you to discover. Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. White Ledge Campground

White Ledge campground has 28 sites. Two hiking trails leave the campground: the White Ledge Trail is a moderate 4 mile loop and the Carter Ledge Trail is a strenuous 4.5 mile hike to the summit of Mt. Chocorua, one of the most popular mountains in the National Forest.

White Ledge Trailhead

White Ledge Loop is a 4.4 mile loop trail to White Ledge (2,010 ft.); a 1,450 feet elevation gain.

Winniweta Falls Trailhead

This trailhead has limited parking for 1-2 vehicles. The trail travels over gentle terrain after fording the Ellis River, is 0.9 miles in length and accesses a waterfall.

Albany Covered Bridge

The Albany Covered Bridge was first constructed in 1858. Repairs and restorations over the years have kept the bridge in the usable condition you see today. The site has a large parking lot that will accommodate buses and restrooms are available. Champney Falls Trailhead

A popular trailhead located on the Kancamaugus Highway. Trails provide access to the scenic Champney and Pitcher Falls as well as trails leading to the summit of Mt. Chocorua. 

El Caso V Campground

This is an equestrian camping area adjacent to Quemado Lake Recreation Area. El Caso V (Five) Campground is a partially developed campground located just outside of Quemado Lake Recreation Area. It is primarily for equestrian use since horses may not be taken into the recreation area. Corrals and water are not provided. Cottonwoods and ponderosa pines provide shade throughout the campsite.

Aldo Leopold Vista Picnic Area

Aldo Leopold Vista offers vast panoramic views of the Mogollon Mountains and the Gila Wilderness to the east, the San Francisco River Valley and bluffs to the north and the high plains of Mule Creek and Arizona to the west and southwest. The district is located in the heart of the Gila National Forest and covers an area of 686,171 acres. The majority of the district is designated as wilderness and comprises the Gila and Aldo Leopold Wilderness areas. The Silver City Ranger District is the southern-most district on the Gila National Forest. Gwynn Tank Campground

The Gwynn Tank Campground is a flat site in an open ponderosa meadow. Additionally, Gwynn Tank Campground is located adjacent to its namesake Gwynn Tank pond. The pond is historically stocked for recreational fishing and is popular for recreational fishing.

Reserve Ranger District

The Reserve Ranger District is one of the largest districts in the northern portion of the Gila National Forest. Grass plains, chaparral, woodland, pine and mixed conifer habitats are found within the 613,119 acres that make up the district. Glenwood Ranger District

The Glenwood Ranger District includes a diverse landscape with spectacular scenery along the Mogollon Rim. The district is managed for many multi-use purposes; hunting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, camping are the primary recreational activities, with livestock grazing and personal firewood cutting filling out the more common extractive uses. South Fork Campground

South Fork Campground is located on the Reserve Ranger District on the south side of Forest Road 141 (Reserve - Beaverhead Rd). The campground has seven campsites with picnic tables and fire pits with grills - most sites can accomodate trailers up to 32 feet in length. The campground also has one picnic site that is designated for day use.

Forest Ridge Rd. - CDNST Trailhead

Trailhead to access the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (Trail #74 on the Gila National Forest) in the Big Burro Mountains area of the Silver City Ranger District located on the west side of Forest Ridge Road (Grant County CMR 4-6).

Bear Creek - CDNST Trailhead

Trailhead located just to the northwest of Pinos Altos, New Mexico on the Silver City Ranger District located on the east side of Bear Creek Road (Grant County CMR 1-93) to access the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (Trail #74 on the Gila National Forest).  Take the short spur trail starting behind the information kiosk to the south for 0.07 miles to access the Continental Divide…

6 Mile Sno-Park

This sno-park offers access to both motorized and non-motorized winter recreation activities. It can also be used as a base for summer hiking/biking ventures. View a winter snowmobile trail map here.

Skyliners Sno-Park/Trailhead

This sno-park/trailhead is a small parking lot with one toilet. It provides access to non-motorized trails in both summer and winter. Spectacular Tumalo Falls is about three miles west of here, accessible by well-marked ski/bike/hike trails. To view a map of the nordic trail system accessed at this sno-park, click here.

Blue Bay Boating Site

This shallow launch provides access to Suttle Lake at the slow speed (10mph) end of the lake.  Large craft are not reccommended. Recreation Fee Site: Parking at this site requires a recreation pass. Passes are NOT available at this site, but can be purchased from Forest Service offices or vendors.

Camp Sherman Campground

Camp Sherman Campground is the first campground that you come to after going through the town of Camp Sherman in the Metolius Basin. Find a map of this campground here.

Candle Creek Campground

At the confluence of Candle Creek and the Metolius River, Candle Creek Campground offers opportunities for fishing and hiking. This campground is not recommended for RVs.

Lower Canyon Creek Campground

Lower Canyon Creek Campground is located at the confluence of Canyon Creek and the upper Metolius River.

Cold Springs Campground

Cold Springs Campground is located southwest of Sisters, Oregon. Maximum site spur length is 156 feet.

Pioneer Ford Campground

Pioneer Ford Campground is located next to the Metolius River and this site provides access to fishing and hiking trails.
