Natural Resources
The Land Resource Management Plan (LRMP) for the Dakota Prairie Grasslands is a strategic framework that guides land use and management decisions within the region. It aims to balance various competing needs and interests, including grazing, recreation, wildlife habitat conservation, and other resource uses. The plan outlines specific actions and objectives to achieve these goals, addressing issues like grazing permits, livestock management, fencing, and access restrictions.

Dakota Prairie Grasslands Monitoring Program
The Grasslands Plan Monitoring Program is a structured system for assessing and evaluating the health and condition of grassland ecosystems. It helps determine if management practices, like restoration efforts, improve grassland health and habitat suitability. The program often uses specific protocols, like the Grassland Effectiveness Monitoring (GEM) protocol, to collect data on vegetation, habitat structure, and plant species to gauge changes in habitat.
The Biennial Monitoring Evaluation Report evaluates monitoring questions and indicators presented in the Land Resource Management Plan Monitoring Plan chapter concerning management actions carried out in the plan area. The report is not a decision document; it is designed to provide the necessary information to help the responsible official determine a course of action based on recommended management adjustments within the report.
Note: The following PDFs of the Biennial Monitoring Reports in 2005, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1999 & 2000 (below) are standalone documents with their internal page numbering, which is not compliant with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Off-Highway Vehicle Record of Decision and Plan Amendment
Pertaining to the USDA Forest Service managed lands in Montana, North Dakota, and portions of South Dakota.
The Forest Service (FS) has made a decision to the amend forest plans listed on the document. The amendment eliminates wheeled motorized cross-country travel with a few specific exceptions. The decision is based on the analysis in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), which was prepared jointly with the Bureau of Land Management. This decision document applies to National Forest System Lands only. Each national forest and grassland manage OHV use based on its land and resource management plan (referred to as forest plans). The Dakota Prairie Grasslands are currently covered by the Custer National Forest plan and included in that plan.
