Special-use Authorization Permits

The Dakota Prairie Grasslands (DPG) receives numerous individual and business applications each year requesting use of National Forest System (NFS) lands for activities such as grazing, oil and gas, recreation events, research, photography, video production, road and utility rights-of-way, and more.

Special-use Authorization Defined

A special-use authorization is a legal document, such as a permit, term permit, lease, or easement, that allows occupancy, use, rights, or privileges on DPG-managed public lands. Authorizations grant rights or privileges to occupy NFS land for various approved uses. These permits contain specific terms and conditions that the holder must follow.

Special-use Authorization Application Process

Before conducting a special-use activity, individuals or entities must submit an application for review by the DPG. The request will be analyzed to determine whether the proposed use complies with all applicable management plans and laws, whether there is a demonstrated need for the activity, and whether the use is appropriate on DPG lands. Special-use Authorization permits are a temporary authority granted for specific land use for a particular period of time.

It is important to note that not all proponents will receive permit approval. Therefore, any action taken before receiving a special-use authorization, such as occupying public lands, advertising, or expending funds, is premature, unlawful, and at the proponent's own risk.

Depending on the proposal's complexity, obtaining a special-use authorization can be a lengthy process; therefore, please initiate the process early.
