Picnicking
Across the Dakota Prairie Grasslands, you’ll find plenty of picnic spots. Not only does the Blacktail Picnic Area offer three covered picnic tables, but all 13 campgrounds also have tables at occupied sites, making it easy to relax and enjoy a meal outdoors. If you’re with a larger group, head to Buffalo Gap Campground or CCC Campground, where a covered pavilion is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Prefer a blanket picnic? Enjoy your meal in the fresh prairie air; every campground and the surrounding grassland provide plenty of open space.

Single picnic areas across the Dakota Prairie Grasslands can be found in established campgrounds and designated sites, such as the Blacktail Picnic Area, offering simple, quiet spots to enjoy a meal outdoors.
Picnicking - Group
Group picnic opportunities across the Dakota Prairie Grasslands include the spacious grasslands themselves, but there are covered picnic areas at the CCC Campground and Buffalo Gap Campground, both available on a first‑come, first‑served basis and well‑suited for group gatherings.
