Fire
Southwestern forests evolved with frequent wildfire, and the Gila National Forest has a long history of using fire to maintain and restore forest health. Several very large wildfire events since 2012 have left their marks on the landscape, leaving stands of dead stems. Many smaller wildfires and prescribed fires have scorched the stems of trees, burned dead and down fuels, and burned back grass and brush, reducing the severity of the next wildfire.
If you discover a new wildfire exit the area and report it to 911 at your soonest opportunity.
