The Forest Service follows NEPA regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under this rule, Forest Service officials determine which proposed projects are shared for public input.

The agency no longer issues a schedule of proposed actions (SOPA) report. Below is the current list of proposed projects available for review—your opportunity to learn more, share feedback, and stay engaged in decisions that shape the future of our public lands.

Gila National Forest Proposed Projects

Use hand tools and heavy equipment to implement low-tech restoration techniques (Zuni bowl, one-rock grade control structures, plantings) to stabilize 0.7 mile of ephemeral stream channel, floodplain, wet meadow, and Forest Road 226. Replace a spring box, and fell 20 ponderosa pine for log sills.

Conduct restoration and management actions within 24 6th-code watersheds that were affected by the 2022 Black Fire. Actions will aim to restore and improve watershed and habitat conditions, roads, trails, recreation facilities, and vegetation.

The Gila National Forest proposes to reconstruct and upgrade the Forks Campground, which includes constructing a sustainable trail for river access on the north and south end of the project area, naturalize existing social trails, and constructing primitive tent sites.

Western NM Telephone proposes to install 225.8 miles of fiber optic cable in Grant and Catron Counties, New Mexico, from 10 mi. W of Silver City, along US Highway 180 through Cliff to Alma, then along NM Highways 12 and 32 to Reserve and Apache Creek, also to Mule Creek and Luna.

Issue a special use permit to WNMC. for a 10-foot wide right of way to install fiber optic cable on 11.18 acres of Gila National Forest from Gold Gulch to Jack's Peak, within or along the roadway of Gold Gulch Road and Jack's Peak Road; and an expanded metal platform and equipment shed on the peak.

Install water system for improved livestock grazing management. Includes two new wells, eight new storage tanks, 12 new drinkers, and 5.25 miles of above-ground black plastic pipeline to connect wells, tanks, and drinkers.

Use prescribed fire and hand and mechanical thinning to reduce natural fuels and improve timber stand health and wildlife habitat on 2,402 acres of the Silver City Ranger District. Project would retain large trees, removing ladder fuels and altering the vertical and horizontal continuity of fuels.

Proposal is to rehabilitate and maintain National Forest System Road (NFSR) 141 from Milepost 0.69 to 18.81.

Reissue existing special use permit for use of Prior pasture for maintaining a corral, storage building and 200 acre pasture at Prior Cabin for administrative purposes

Enhance approximately 112 acres and facilitate improvement of watershed and riparian conditions by providing protection to threatened and endangered species and their habitat through the construction of additional barriers to livestock grazing use in the perennial areas of the Mainstem Negrito Creek

Gates will be installed at five openings to the Palomas Creek Cave to protect sensitive bat and other wildlife habitat. Recent and ongoing vandalism within the cave system indicates human activities and presence within the cave system that may harm bat habitat through disturbance and disease spread.

Renew and combine several special use permits into one master permit for the operation and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure; access; and vegetation management.

Reroute approximately 1.07 miles of the northern portion of Redstone #206 Trail and move trailhead kiosk and other signage to Silver Creek Divide along Bursum Road.

Forest Plan Revision. See https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/gila/planning/forest-plan-revision for more information

Project proposes the installation of a new single vault CXT toilet at the Signal Peak Lookout facility.

Proposal has multiple vegetation treatment types including mechanical thinning, hand thinning, herbicide application, and prescribed fire in order to protect the Wildland Urban Interface from wildfire.

Reissue a special use permit for utility cooridor access and maintenance

The Gila National Forest proposes to remove standing dead trees through a timber salvage operation on National Forest System lands within the perimeter of the 2025 Trout Fire on 83 acres of the Silver City Ranger District in an IRA —where existing forest roads provide public access.

Install a well with solar pump to provide non-potable water to a livestock watering system (with secondary wildlife benefits) on the Negrito-Yeguas Allotment. Includes four troughs, one storage tank, 1,000 feet of buried pipeline, 3.6 miles surface-mounted pipeline and one creek crossing.
