Natural Resources
Managing the Gila National Forest is about managing resources, such as wildlife, rangeland, timber, ecosystems, recreation sites, people, and more. Natural resources are affected by fire, flood, drought, and other environmental conditions, to which we must be adaptable to assure success.
Black Fire Recovery
The Gila National Forest and its partners at Bat Conservation International, National Forest Foundation, Sierra County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Natural Curiosity are working together to restore a landscape affected by the 2022 Black Fire and subsequent flooding. A Watershed Restoration Action Plan has been approved, covering 24 watersheds affected by the fire, flood, and downstream effects.
Wildfire Crisis Strategy Firesheds
Gila National Forest is focusing forest restoration, fire mitigation, and fuels reduction within two focal areas: Southern Gila fireshed and Northwest Gila fireshed. In the Southern Gila fireshed, we are implementing the Bear Creek to Signal Peak project and planning the Silver City West project. Within the Northwest Gila fireshed, we are implementing the Luna Landscape Restoration project.
