SOPA Reports

The Schedule of Proposed Actions (SOPA) contains a list of proposed actions for Hiawatha National Forest that will soon begin or are currently undergoing environmental analysis and documentation. It provides information so that you can become aware of and indicate your interest in specific proposals. We encourage your early and ongoing involvement in any proposals of interest to you.

Hiawatha National Forest Projects

Permittee would like to guide during sanctioned hunting seasons for turkey, white-tailed deer and bear. Base camping with max of 6 hunters, with 6 identified bait stations.

The proposed action is to authorize the Forest Service or approved concessionaires to implement maintenance activities in developed campgrounds to minimize environmental disturbance, enhance user experience and ensure public safety.

Vegetation Management and Recreation proposal

The proposed project consists of the replacement of the existing Carp River Bridge 3445-0.1 on FR3445 which spans the Carp River.

The Forest Service is proposing to build alternative power infrastructure (i.e. solar) that would be used to power the infrastructure at Williams Landing and the Grand Island Maintenance Garage.

This project includes bank stabilization along 200 feet of Lake Superior shoreline in front of the historic Mather-Klauer Lodge on Grand Island National Recreation Area.

Make improvements to the existing water systems at Murray Bay, Juniper Flats, and Mather Lodge. Improvements will include installation of new wellhouses and associate infrastructure at Murray Bay and Juniper Flats, and upgrades at Mather Lodge.

Long-term vegetation management of Jack Pine ecosystems. Multi-year forest-wide project designed to identify, develop, and maintain about 45,000 acres of jack pine ecosystem, and maintain or create fuelbreaks for neighboring infrastructure.

The Forest Service is proposing to treat vegetation on approximately 16,000 acres to benefit forest health, to treat hazardous fuels, and to enhance wildlife habitat.

The proposed action is needed to provide high speed, broadband internet to communities in Delta, Chippewa, and Mackinac counties through the Mobile Now Act. Rural communities in these locations are underserved.

The North Country Trail Association (NCTA) and Hiawatha National Forest (HIF) recreation staff are proposing to reroute 2 segments of the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST).

Proposed expansion is 50 feet x 90 feet for a total of 0.13 acres to expand parking for wildland fire vehicles and snowplowing.

Replace the two current wilderness toilet structures with moldering style toilet structures and decommission existing toilet structures.

This project is a duplicate and has been Cancelled. Those interested in information related to this project should refer to project ID #68099. Project 68098 will remain in the SOPA for one quarter then be removed.

The Chippewa County SORVA, in cooperation with the Michigan DNR will sign, grade, and potentially harden the approximately 250 foot user-developed trail that runs from M-123 to FR 3421.
