Boating - Motorized
Sheyenne River Water Trail: Small motorboats are allowed on the Sheyenne River Water Trail within the Sheyenne National Grassland, although the trail is primarily designed for paddling. Small motors are permitted on the river within the Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Users must follow all North Dakota Game & Fish watercraft regulations while in WMAs
Boating - Non-Motorized
- Sather Lake Recreation Area: Features a tranquil lake with a boat launch, ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing for crappie, trout, and bass.
- Little Missouri River: Provides opportunities for paddling, though it is often shallow and silty, making it best suited for experienced, adventurous paddlers looking to navigate through the heart of the badlands. Access from the DPG includes several locations in the Little Missouri National Grassland, including Birnt Hill Loop (within Birnt Hills Overlook), and Maah Daah Hey Trail access points in Buffalo Gap, Coal Creek, and CCC Campgrounds.
- Sheyenne River Water Trail: This river offers a gentle, scenic route through eastern North Dakota. It features four primary, semi-primitive access sites (including Ylvisaker Bridge, Mirror Pool, Brome Field, and East River) designated for hand-launching canoes and kayaks. The river is primarily used for non-motorized paddling.
- Blacktail Picnic Area: Located in South Dakota, this area features a stocked fishing pond with a dock, perfect for a quiet, small-boat experience, such as kayaks or canoes.
