Forest Products

A permit for forest product collection must be issued before harvesting any firewood, transplants, post and poles, mushrooms, and other forest products; except for the small amounts used for campfires or gathered casually while visiting the Forests and Grassland and categorized as “incidental use.”

The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests are now offering online firewood permits through a new E-Permits system. 

How To Obtain A Forest Product Permit

For Fuelwood Permits:

  • Fuelwood permits are available for purchase year-round through our E-Permits system.

For Mushrooms, Transplants, and Post and Pole Permits:

  1. Select the appropriate Permit Conditions & Removal Request Document below.
  2. Fill out and sign documents (signatures are required on first and last page).
  3. Email signed documents to SM.FS.ARPForProd@usda.gov.
  4. Wait for Forest Service staff to call for payment.
  5. You will receive an email with your authorized permit containing a Forest Service staff signature.
  6. Print and sign your permit.
  7. Carry the permit with you. As you harvest, fill out the "Product Quantity Removal Record" section located on the paper permit. 

Services at each office may be limited on a daily basis. For example, we may not be able to issue a permit at all times. Should you plan on visiting an office, we recommend calling BEFORE making the trip.

Fuelwood Permit Conditions & Removal Request For All Ranger Districts

  • Fuelwood permits are available for purchase year-round through our E-Permits system.
  • Not all dead wood is fair game
    • Trimming dead limbs from live trees is not permitted on the forest, and standing dead trees may only be cut if they meet specific standards. Before cutting any dead tree check it carefully for signs of wildlife habitation.

The cost of a permit varies according to the product, type of wood to be harvested and the district it is harvested on. The definition of a "cord" of wood is: a well-stacked pile 8 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet high.

Where to Harvest

Harvesting Area Maps are organized by Ranger District. Use the Ranger District Locator to find your area. Forest products may not be cut or gathered in wilderness areas or developed recreation sites including: campgrounds, picnic areas, summer home groups, trailheads or private property.

Please remember it is your responsibility to know where you are harvesting at all times. 

When to Harvest

For Fuelwood Permits:

  • Permits are available for purchase year-round through our E-Permits system.
  • Fuelwood permits are valid for up to one year from point of issuance.
    • This permit will terminate either at midnight of the termination date shown on your permit, or when the quantity you have purchased is reached, whichever comes first.

For Mushroom, Transplant, and Post and Pole Permits:

  • Permits are available for purchase generally beginning in May and end November 15th. This coincides with the open season for majority of the Forest Service roads and access points across the Forest.
  • A permit purchased during the purchasing season is valid until April 30th of the following year. If you plan on transplanting during the early spring (before April 30th), please purchase a transplant permit during the prior year's permitting window.
