The Forest Service follows NEPA regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under this rule, Forest Service officials determine which proposed projects are shared for public input.

The agency no longer issues a schedule of proposed actions (SOPA) report. Below is the current list of proposed projects available for review—your opportunity to learn more, share feedback, and stay engaged in decisions that shape the future of our public lands.

Coconino National Forest Proposed Projects

Construction of a corral within the Shipping Pasture of the 13 Mile Rock Allotment that lacks proper range infrastructure for the permittee to manage and sort cattle. Replacement of aging existing transmission line and poles to allow for safer and more reliable electrical service. The static wire on the transmission line would be replaced with optical ground wire, allowing for fiber optic communication uses.

Arizona Public Service Co. proposes a 69kV electric transmission line to improve electric reliability for nearby communities. Alternatives considered for this project would require a Forest Plan Amendment for guidelines regarding scenic resources.

Reissuances of 3 buried communication lines. 1) Hwy180 near Kendrick Park to Hwy89 to Doney Park 2)Doney to I40 east and south to JW Powell 3)I17 to Schnebly Hill to Sedona south along Hwy89A to Cottonwood.

This project proposes installing a 13-mile water distribution system. Activities include improving one mile of Forest Road 9473S, constructing one pump house with a diesel pump and generator, installing a 250,000-gallon storage tank, and installation of 13 miles of polyethylene pipe.

Installation of 55 miles of a below ground water distribution system on the Angell, Deep Lake and Youngs Canyon allotments including replacement of a 15,000 gallon catchment and trough at Elk Tank, and 30 trough installations throughout the allotments for better livestock/wildlife distribution.

Construct approximately 39-miles of singletrack shared-use non-motorized recreation trail to remove the Arizona Trail (a State Scenic Trail and National Scenic Trail) from its current co-location with National Forest system roads on the Coconino National Forest.

Reissue permit for operation and maintenance of aerial/buried distribution power lines, including facilities like gates/utility boxes/pads/other communication poles and equipment. Vegetation removal and equipment replacement is included with permit.

Changes to designations (as currently shown on the Motor Vehicle Use Map)for motor vehicles on roads, trails, and areas throughout the Coconino National Forest

Improve habitat for the threatened Chiricahua Leopard Frog in Hackberry Spring and Stream by increasing surface water extent and pool depth in the reach of the channel downstream from Hackberry Spring.

Clean five stock tanks that either are occupied by the threatened Chiricahua leopard frog or that occur in close proximity to occupied sites. The five tanks include: Willow, Cimarron, Pambo, Viede, and Kiki.

Doors of Dimension LLC has requested access across Coconino National Forest Lands to build a driveway to their private property Yavapai County Parcel # 408-12-011A.

Implementation of forest restoration activities including thinning of trees, prescribed fire treatments, and watershed and road restoration within 988,764 acres of the Coconino and Kaibab National Forests. See www.fs.usda.gov/4fri for information.

A 20-year subsurface withdrawal of 10,024.3 acres of National Forest System lands within the Coconino National Forest, in Oak Creek Canyon.

Permit use of already existing driveway across Forest Service System lands.

The Forest Service proposes to authorize Prescott College to conduct academic field courses year-round across forests in Arizona including adventure education, biology, human ecology, natural history, physical geography, & field ecology.

Reissuance of a Fiber Optic Line permit to Qwest, dba CenturyLink. This is the Master Permit for the phone lines that Qwest has on the forest.

Removal of designation of motorized use and car camping on forest roads overlaying high-pressure gas lines including 9007N, 160, 6796, and 9231Q to stabilize the road surface, reestablish low-lying vegetation, and restore conditions to previous use patterns.

Expanding the Western Gateway trailhead infrastructure, including grading and surfacing the parking lot; adding equestrian parking; and widening the Centennial Trail to make it ADA compliant.
