Blue Range Wilderness Area

The 29,304 acre Blue Range Wilderness was designated in 1980 and is located on the western border of New Mexico and is managed by the Gila National Forest. It adjoins the Blue Range Primitive Area, which is managed by the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in Arizona.

General Information

The Blue Range Wilderness is characterized by rimrock peaks and ridges overlooking rocky, wooded canyons. Elevations range from 5,300 feet at the bottom of Pueblo Creek to over 8,800 feet at Whiterocks Mountain, along the southern border of the wilderness area. Pueblo Creek is the main drainage through the area, with trails following the length of the canyon bottom and others following the high rimrock edge with views overlooking the wilderness area.

Passes & Permits

No passes are required for use.  Permits are required for organized groups entering the Blue Range Wilderness.
