Permits

Before you plan an activity on the Forest, please be sure to check whether or not you need a permit or pass. Common activities that that may require a permit include wood cutting, rock and seed collecting, cutting a Christmas tree, post and pole,  accessing the Sawtooth Wilderness Area, and a number of other special uses. 

Sawtooth Wilderness Permits

The Sawtooth Wilderness requires a permit. Please call ahead for groups of 8-12 or self issue if less than 8. Find out more about the rules and regulations here.

Special and Commercial Uses

A special-use authorization is a legal document that authorizes occupancy, use, rights, or privileges on National Forest System lands. Large private events and commercial activities, like outfitting and guiding or commercial filming and photography, require permits.

Personal Use Firewood Permits typically go on sale each May, depending on road conditions.   

Christmas Tree Permits

A fresh cut Christmas, lit up and decorated with red ornaments, reflects in the window behind it.

Christmas Tree Permits can be purchased at Sawtooth National Forest offices, participating vendors, and online at Recreation.gov click on link below.
