Gallinas Campground - Upper

Upper Gallinas Campground provides easy access to New Mexico Hwy 152 and is nicely developed. The site is easily accessed by most vehicles, in most weather conditions. The parking lot and picnic sites are lined with gravel, making this the perfect choice for visitors wanting to experience the outdoors without sacrificing comfort.

General Information

Day use and foot traffic are welcome. The upper portions of this watershed were severely burned during the Silver Fire in 2013.  Although this area is healing, flooding could occur.

There is a corral near the campground for stock. The campground is situated fairly close to the highway. Visitors can expect to hear traffic.

Closest Stores:
A few general stores are located in the Mimbres Valley, approximately 17 miles west of the campground along NM State Hwy 152. Food, phone, and gasoline are available.

No pass required

Permits are required for commercial or organized uses.

There is a 14-day stay limit. OHV/ATV use is prohibited. Hunting and shooting are prohibited. Stock is allowed in the immediate campground.

No fees are required for this site

Pets must be leashed in the campground

Please contact the Gila National Forest Supervisors Office at 575-388-8201 for information about outfitters and guides who are authorized to operate on the forest.

Directions

The campground is located approximately 37 miles east of Silver City along the north side of New Mexico Highway 152, between mileposts 26 and 27. Easily identified by posted signs.

Travel Considerations

Alert from NMDOT: New Mexico Highway 152 eastbound and westbound from mile marker 15, San Lorenzo to mile marker 40, Kingston.

New Mexico Highway 152 between San Lorenzo and Kingston has steep grades and numerous tight turns. Trucks without retarder brakes and/or longer than 40 feet in length are PROHIBITED on this section of NM 152. Consider using an alternate route - New Mexico Highway 26 to US Highway 180 or US Highway 60 to New Mexico Highway 12 to US highway 180. THIS IS A PERMANENT ALERT.
