WASHINGTON, D.C.—Poverty, low income and lack of access to resources negatively impacts families by limiting basic access to proper health care, nutrition and education. Low socio-economic status often is also synonymous with social discrimination. Poverty rates can also vary widely by race. In the U.S., Black Americans have the highest incidence of poverty at 31%, American Indians/Alaska Native had the second-highest at 30% and Hispanics have the third-highest poverty rate at 23.8%.

Currently, around the world, 734 million people live below the international poverty line and are deprived of basic human needs. The events of the past year will likely have adverse effects on poverty at the global level by as much as half a billion people. This could mean that as much as 8% of the total human population around the globe will be living on just $2 a day. It will take a long time to recover. Current baseline projections suggest that 6% of the global population will still be living in extreme poverty by 2030.
