Employee Perspective: A legacy of fishing in Georgia
Getting up early to go fishing with my dad is one of my fondest memories. Of course, the excitement of going fishing was what propelled me from my slumber but spending time with dad was most important. These early excursions as a youngster led to my love of fishing and the outdoors. Riding our bikes as far as we could, my friends and I would explore new fishing destinations whenever possible. As my appreciation for the natural world continued to grow, my future was unfolding before me. Today, as a father, I continue to stoke my passion for fisheries through the joy my children get from fishing with me. With Father’s Day approaching, it seems an appropriate time to think back to days fishing with family over the years.
As a fish biologist, I have the honor of helping manage and provide recreational fishing opportunities across the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. One location I recently surveyed is Lake Winfield Scott. We worked with Georgia Department of Natural Resources biologists to conduct a fish survey at the lake in early May this year to determine population levels and health. Based on the results of the survey, the 15-acre Lake Winfield Scott boasts a spectacular population of largemouth bass, some of which could be considered trophy size. Two specimens weighed in at more than eight pounds! Other species collected included bluegill, yellow perch, brown bullhead and black crappie.
Lake Winfield Scott is nestled in the mountains of North Georgia. The recreation area provides a myriad of opportunities for outdoor recreation, from kayaking and fishing, to swimming, to hiking, camping and picnicking.
The forest invites the public to visit during Great Outdoors Month. This year, it’s celebrating the 20th anniversary of National Fishing and Boating Week June 4-12. And, in early June, the Blue Ridge Ranger District hosts a kid’s fishing rodeo.
Whether you are a seasoned angler, new to the sport, or want to introduce your family to the joy of fishing, Lake Winfield Scott is great destination. Who knows? Life-long memories may be formed during your trip!
