The gift that keeps on giving: Appreciation
WISCONSIN — While recognizing and highlighting accomplishments are vital to a successful organization any time of year, it’s especially meaningful as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday. In fact, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, thanksgiving means “a public acknowledgment or celebration of divine goodness; the act of giving thanks; and a prayer expressing gratitude.”
Being recognized for a job well done not only boosts an employee’s morale but also makes them feel more valued and connected to our mission. That’s why, in October 2023, leaders in the Eastern Region rolled out a new and innovative employee recognition tool, Cheers for Peers. It’s a platform that’s easy to use, easy to access and visible to all Eastern Region employees — perfect for a dispersed workforce.
This recognition tool has not only connected teams but also inspired greater participation in appreciating colleagues. In its first year, Cheers for Peers has been used by more than 1,200 regional employees. In the fourth quarter alone, there were 359 active users, 17 posts, 18 replies, 202 reactions and 975 mentions.
Cheers for Peers is a Teams channel where everyone in the Eastern Region has access to share their appreciation, big and small. It’s a virtual bulletin board where staff post thanks for someone’s great work. Users can tag those being recognized and their supervisor. They receive a notification of the posting while others who visit the Teams channel can see all the great work occurring across the region.
“The tool has shown positive impacts — both internally and externally,” said Nick Pardi, director for Public and Government Relations, Region 9. “Internally, it provides a convenient and inclusive way to celebrate achievements, enhancing team spirit across the region. Externally, a motivated workforce is better equipped to deliver high-quality services, which ultimately benefits underserved communities relying on the Forest Service’s work.”
From the beginning, the Eastern Region has found creative ways to encourage employees to engage with the tool — even by helping to name it. During the rollout, staff from across the region voted in a naming contest where Cheers for Peers emerged as the winner. Throughout the year, “praise waves” have been held to be intentional about sharing appreciation for each other.
Cheers for Peers also keeps employees engaged by offering plenty of fun, individualized ways to recognize colleagues. Part of the rollout included a SharePoint page that features e-cards designed by the region’s Public & Government Relations Creative Services team. The e-cards have various employee-focused observances, including Administrative Professionals Day and Public Service Recognition Week. There are even .gif files that can be personalized.
As the Eastern Region celebrates the first year of Cheers for Peers, it’s clear that the best gift is appreciation!
