The Jackknife Project: A story of forest management

December 27, 2024

MONTANA — The Flathead National Forest and Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation are using the Good Neighbor Authority to reduce wildfire risks to local communities through the Jackknife Project.

The Jackknife Project is located within the wildland urban interface, approximately one mile west of the community of Olney, Mont., adjacent to Stillwater State Forest trust lands and private residential properties.

The Jackknife Project is facilitated through GNA, which enables the Forest Service and DNRC to plan, coordinate, and implement forest management and restoration projects, increasing each agency’s capacity to complete important project work. With this project, the agencies are reducing tree densities and accumulated combustible vegetation and improving the diversity and resilience of the forest. The Good Neighbor Authority helps get this work done.
